A few years ago, "search" meant one thing: typing a few words into Google. That's no longer the whole picture. A meaningful and growing share of people now start their research by asking an AI assistant directly — "what's a good accountant near me," "which agency should I use for social media," "compare these two options for me." If your business isn't part of the answer, you don't just rank lower. You're invisible for that entire conversation.
This is what people are starting to call AEO — Answer Engine Optimization. It's not a replacement for SEO, it's an extension of it, and here's what actually helps.
1. Structure your content so it can be quoted, not just read
AI tools tend to pull from content that answers a specific question clearly and concisely, usually near the top of a page. If your pricing, your service area, or your key differentiator is buried in paragraph four after a long company history, it's much less likely to get surfaced. Put the direct answer first, then explain.
2. Use clear, factual statements — not just marketing language
"We're the best in the business" isn't something an AI tool can verify or quote confidently. "We offer same-day appointments and serve the greater [your area]" is a concrete, checkable claim. AI systems favor content that reads like a factual answer over content that reads like an ad.
3. FAQ sections are doing double duty now
A well-written FAQ section, marked up with proper schema, is one of the most direct ways to feed AI tools a clean question-and-answer pair about your business. It's useful for human visitors and it happens to be exactly the format AI systems are built to extract from.
Try this: Write down the five questions your customers ask most before booking or buying. Answer each one directly, in two to three sentences, on your site. That's the core of an AEO-friendly FAQ.
4. Consistency across the web still counts
AI systems, like search engines before them, weigh how consistently your business name, services and location appear across your website, Google Business Profile, and other listings. Conflicting information (an old address on one platform, a different phone number on another) makes it harder for any system — human or AI — to trust and cite you confidently. This is the exact groundwork our SEO & content services are built to fix first.
5. Reviews and mentions elsewhere still matter, maybe more
AI answer engines often draw on a wider pool of sources than a simple Google search would show you — review sites, forums, local publications. Getting genuinely mentioned and reviewed across a few relevant, real platforms does more for AI visibility than any amount of on-page tweaking alone.
The honest truth about AEO right now
Nobody — including the platforms themselves — has a perfect formula for this yet, and anyone promising guaranteed AI citations is overselling. What we do know is that the businesses showing up in AI answers today are, overwhelmingly, the ones that already had strong fundamentals: clear content, consistent information, and real signals of trust from other sites. AEO isn't a shortcut around good marketing. It's a reason to finally finish the good marketing you've been putting off.
